Mac OS X 10.7 Developer Preview on VirtualBox – Setup Trial 1

Today, I have fired up my VirtualBox v4, prepared a VM and tried to setup Mac OS X 10.7.

What I have done is basically:

  • Create a Virtual Machine as I have prepared for setting up Max OS X 10.6.
  • Mount Empire EFI ISO image and Start the VM
  • Switch to Mac OSX 10.7 DVD.

The above steps are simply what I did for setting up Mac OSX 10.6.  For details, please see my Step-by-Step Guide for Virtualizing Snow Leopard under VirtualBox v4.

However, this does not work.  Error in loading kext es.osx6.driver.Ev0reboot is reported…..

I am try another approach to kick off the installation right now…. So, stay tuned for my news.

    Hi Takwing,

Have you tried this guide here:

I know it is for VMWare, but it might work for VirtualBox with some modifications.

I hope you manage to get it working.

    All the best

    Hi Takwing,

Here is a PDF Version of the Guide from that site that I printed out.

    I hope this helps.

    All the best

Hi, I loved your Howto on installing Snow Leopard by applying the SmcDeviceKey – worked perfectly.

Unfortunately, updating to Lion from the Appstore within the SL VM doesnt work. As far as I have investigated, the problem lies in the fact that the Lion installer supports only a limited amount of mainboard ID’s.

Given the ID’s as posted in the Virtualbox forum, is there a “vboxmanage setextradata” command similar to SmcDeviceKey?

Looking forward to read from you.

Hi Takwing, I have managed to install Lion in VBox 4.1.2. Maybe you find my walkthrough useful in order to compile a new howto for Lion.

Installing Mac OS X Lion in Virtualbox 4.1.2
    What you need
    1. Lion USB Installer Stick or DMG (can be ordered from the Apple Store)
    2. Virtualbox 4 (4.1.2 was tested)
    3. A working installation of OS X Snow Leopard (instructions see
    4. About 2 hours of your time

    Step 1:
Follow the steps as shown in ( in order to create a bootable installation vdi. In order to attach the Lion USB Stick in Snow Leopard, you need to set the USB Filters (during stick is attached) in order to make the stick visible in SL. In contrast to the comments at the bottom of the post, I attached the 5 Gig „LionInstaller.vdi“ not as SCSI but rather as IDE, and it also worked.

    Step 2:
On the LionInstaller.vdi Disk, exchange OSInstall.mpkg against the version contained in the file as found under ( This patches the installer source code in a way that virtualization checking is disabled. This can be done by hand if a flat package editor is available, as shown in the article to be found in step 5.

Step 3: Create a VM as described in ( Attach both a new Drive SATA0 für the Lion os and SATA 1 for LionInstaller. Close Virtualbox.

Step 4. Open a Windows Command Line and add the SmcDeviceKey according to (

Step 5: Keep following the guide on ( You need to boot with HackBoot.iso after installation once in order to delete /System/Library/CoreServices/PlatformSupport.plist which checks the supported mainboard model numbers. Dont install fakesmc.kext or nullCPUPowermanagement.kext.

Step 6. Remove Hackboot.iso. Boot Lion native under Virtualbox.

    Additional information:

More than one processor: delete /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext and then rebuild kext cache with: sudo kextcache –system-caches as shown in (

Higher resultions: VBoxManage setextradata VBoxInternal2/EfiGopMode , e.g. typing in Windows Command Prompt „VBoxManage setextradata „Lion“ VBoxInternal2/EfiGopMode 4“ sets resolution of Lion to 1440×900.
